5 Planet-Friendly Clothing Tips for Parents

Hello My Happy Planet Bloggers!

We're launching our newest organic and sustainable clothing line for kids. We at Here By Northeast Brand wanted to share a bit on why we decided to release an infant and toddler line. A few years ago, I was laid-off from my job and was at a crossroads on what to do next. I've designed for other brands for the past 20+ years. Eventually, the goal was to start my own business, but I thought I still wasn't ready. (yes even after 20+ years of experience this was my mindset)

But, the universe had other plans :)

Fast-forward to a few years later, and HERE By Northeast Brand is ready to launch to the world and be your go-to sustainable clothing brand for kids!

I've always had a passion for infant and toddler clothes. I wanted to create uniquely special items that are sustainable and American-Made. I quickly realized that sustainable clothing for children ages 0-5 is not readily available. especially with a high-end streetwear aesthetic that I LOVE!

There are so many benefits to buying planet-friendly clothing, and we are so excited to share our top 5 reasons with you - so keep reading! :)

1. When buying new clothes for your little ones, buy 1-2 sizes up from your child’s current size range. Try cuffing the sleeves or hemming to fit on tees and letting the hem loose as your child grows. Another DIY tip is to convert your baby's bodysuit into an undershirt. Just cut the garment right above the leg opening and hem in a contrasting color for added interest.

2. Cotton, Bamboo, and Hemp are some of the best fabrics used in children’s organic and sustainable clothing. Organic or natural fibers are the best for the Planet because natural fiber fabrics cause much less or zero irritation to the skin and these fibers are low resource-intensive to produce and manufacture.

3. When buying a sustainable gift for a new parent, start with a few bodysuits, tees, or baby pj’s first. These items are the closest to the baby’s skin and provide layering for comfortability.

4. 90% of the world’s clothing is produced in low-and middle-income countries. 40 million workers endure poor working conditions and earn unfair wages. Buying locally-made or made in the USA ensures that you are doing your part to create ethical fashion.

5. Buy upcycled products. 95% of used textiles can be recycled or repurposed. Producing a pair of jeans emits as much carbon emissions in the air as driving a car 80 miles.
